About this business

David Dessinger loved Peet's Coffee because of its rich, bold coffee. This passion for coffee roasting led David, who eventually founded Pegasus Coffee Company, across the state. He discovered the coffee at Peet's when he became a regular customer in Berkeley. In the 1970s, David moved to Bainbridge Island, WA, to find that Peet's Coffee was not available there. Alfred Peet, the master himself, helped him learn how to buy and roast coffee beans well. David received his last shipment of coffee beans at Peet's, and his new business, Pegasus Coffee, was born. He began trying to roast the coffee in a small room aboard his boat in Eagle Harbor (Pegasus Coffee, n.d.). After months of trial and error, the garage door was opened for the first time in December 1979, and the aroma of fresh coffee wafted out. The beans were roasted by hand on a gas-fired coffee roaster. The enticing smell of coffee attracted farmers, sailors, and anyone else who was wandering by (Pegasus Coffee, n.d.). Free coffee samples were offered, and word of mouth spread the news that Pegasus Coffee was the best in the county. The success led to the opening of the coffeehouse that David had always envisioned. Pegasus Coffee became a well-known name in coffee.
