George Williams initiated the idea in 1844! Unexpectedly, a young gentleman from London, George Williams, got The Young Men's Christian Association underway without fully understanding the dramatic impact it would have. In 1841, Williams arrived in London, his first time in the city. He felt an urge to start a group with men his age so they could help him to lower his self-esteem while also getting closer to Christ. The Young Men's Christian Association began with this simple idea. It was not until Williams' matching ties that North America first saw the movement. The first two North American Young Men's Christian Associations were created in Boston and Montreal. By 1854, there were 36 organizations with 14,000 members in the United States.
