Safety Around Water Program The YMCA is the nation's leading non-profit dedicated to strengthening people and their communities. The YMCA is dedicated to assisting you in discovering your “why,” which may be your more profound sense of meaning. We link you to options that will improve your health and benefit young people. Safety Around Water is designed to teach non-swimmers how to swim and various precautions to take. Classes are open to children aged 6 and up and non-swimming adults. Classes are divided by age groups to ensure the best safety and ability results. Drowning is the third leading cause of death from unintended injuries in persons aged 29 or younger, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Drowning rates for African-American children aged 5-19 years are five times higher than that of white children. A national research found that 70% of African American children and 58% of Hispanic children have little or no swimming ability and may be at the risk of drowning or other water-related injuries. These troubling and preventable trends may be reversed through the YMCA's Safety Around Water program.
