Jim earned his LL.B in Law from the University of New Brunswick after graduating with Honours in Canadian Studies from Trent University and an MA in History from the University of Waterloo. In 1982, he was called to the bar. Jim is also active in the Guelph Community. He has been a Big Brother and has sat on the Board of Directors of Big Sisters of Guelph, Women in Crisis, Canadian Mental Health Association (Wellington-Dufferin), St. Joseph's Hospital, and Kids Can Play. Jim is a Past Chairman of The Guelph Museums, as well as the River Run Centre Board of Directors, and a former chairman. He is a member of The Hillside Community Festival in Guelph's Board of Directors and has been for 25 years. He is currently the Board's liaison to the artistic director. Jim has also been a sessional lecturer at the University of Guelph for over 25 years, teaching real estate law at the Faculty of Marketing and Consumer Studies.
