ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

The Assembly is an artist-run co-op at 68 King St East. A group of artists who exhibit their work regularly manages The Assembly. It's a contemporary art gallery that demonstrates contemporary art at Hamilton in a timely, immediate, and contributing to larger discussions in contemporary art. Carvalho's works focus on post-minimalist aesthetics, conceptual process, and the dialogue of space and the built environment. The work analyses the social, architectural, and geographical circumstances of the place. She appears in the work, either conceptually or literally, to highlight the singularity of her body. It creates parallel experiences for the viewer and the artist. Carvalho's practice in sculpture, performance, and drawing stemmed from her investigation into domestic space and its embodied nature. The practice expanded to the built environment, including interactions. Carvalho has created a set of "architectural" works in which she explores the idea of intimate, experiential spaces. Many of these works challenge modernist construction and design. They articulate a new perspective on the built environment through dismantling and reconfiguration.
