In 1994, The Home Depot entered Canada when Molson Companies purchased five Aikenhead's Home Improvement Warehouse stores. The stores were located in Calgary, Hamilton, Kitchener, Sarnia, and Whitby. Acquisition of Aikenhead's Warehouse from its owners and founders in 1994, similar to what the Home Depot did previously with the purchase of US-based Homers Home Improvement Warehouse. The two founders, Walter Aikenhead and Bill Thurber, were provided with significant amounts of money to sell their stores to Molson Companies. Subsequently, Molson Companies reached an agreement with Atlanta-based The Home Depot to sell the stores. With two stores in Toronto, the Home Depot then opened in Edmonton (Alberta) its first Western Canadian location in March 1994. By 2000, the company had almost 60 locations and started venturing eastwards. The company expanded to Quebec in 2001, opening a store in Laval (QC). The Home Depot opened Thunder Bay (Ontario) in November 2003, its 100th Canadian location.
