Dr. Laurel Johnson, Psychologist

As a registered clinical psychologist, I assess and treat children and adolescents and their families, with a Ph.D. in Developmental Clinical Psychology from the University of Guelph. I am the Clinical Director and Chief Psychologist at Kinark Child and Family Services, the largest children's mental healthcare provider in Ontario. My private practice is not unique; I also manage and supervise the clinical practices of all child and youth mental health programs at Kinark. With regard to teaching, training, and supervising clinicians, I work with clinicians who practice Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). At my private practice, I use these approaches to treat clients. I am a privately practicing adolescent psychologist who collaborates with adolescents and parents to enhance mental health and function. I specialize in psychoeducational and psychodiagnostic assessments, including learning disabilities and giftedness, and provide consultation and intervention for behavioural and social and emotional problems, parenting, anger management, and depression. In a hospital, forensic, and community environments, I have encountered children with severe mental health problems. I previously worked at SylApps Youth Centre, a treatment, custody, and detention facility for girls and boys, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in their Child, Youth, and Families Program.
