Herman Barrett founded Paramount Beauty Salon in 1950 at the York Building, 23rd Street. Ellen Gaunt was hired as Herman’s receptionist two years later. Ellen bought Paramount from Herman in 1968 and introduced esthetic services in Paramount and Saskatoon. In 1955, she offered facial waxing and brow tinting to Paramount guests. Makeup, nail care, and facials were also added. Paramount moved to 145-2nd Avenue North in 1966, and the esthetics department was created. The 1970s saw manicures, sculpted nails, and artificial lashes. A ceramic boutique and women’s fashions were introduced. Guinot's "Hydradermie," a facial machine, was the first in 1977. Aesthetic treatment used galvanic current and was a landmark in facial therapy. It penetrated the skin for hydration and nutrients. Electrolysis, body wraps, and tanning beds were also introduced to Paramount in the 1980s. The first non-surgical face-lift machine used electrical current to stimulate facial muscles, producing excellent results. Ellen also initiated "Paramount Charm Classes" for young Saskatoon ladies.
