VINEGAR PROJECTS is a nonprofit, contemporary art gallery in Birmingham, Alabama, operated by women artists. VINEGAR PROJECTS offers the best of both worlds, and this gallery champions artists. Our budget and organizational structure open up a conversation on value, art, economy, and labor. For example, the arts are always underfunded, and it often forces the artists to work more than what they are paid for. Although most urban renewal and development efforts emphasize the arts as a means of economic growth, artists are always left behind. However, it is possible to strike a balance by supporting artists so they can reach their potential and pursue their vision. This support includes paying artists fairly for their work, and offering them other services and resources that help their career. Our practices should be an example to other businesses and organizations. This will ensure the working and pay conditions for Birmingham artists and beyond are progressively improved. No artist, and no person, should work without pay.
