ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

Creative Growth Art Center began in 1974, pioneering in the field of arts for individuals with disabilities. Its philosophy is anchored on art as a fundamental facet of human expression, with every human being deserving of the right to self-expression. Creative Growth’s vision was clear when it started in the East Bay home of Elias Katz & Florence Ludins Katz. People with intellectual and physical disabilities would express their thoughts and feelings through art, and their pieces would be displayed in a gallery. The Creative Growth Studio now houses more than 140 artists in various mediums. The Creative Growth Studio boasts 12,000 square feet comprised of various workshop areas, and it also has professional artists who encourage and support the physically challenged individuals. The workshops offer high-quality art supplies and are equipped with workshops to work in oil pastel, felt-tip, pastel, monotype, and more. The creative materials range from canvas to paper, from paint to clay, and a kiln for ceramics. Recycling and wood shops are also integrated into the studio for woodworking projects, along with a fiber arts facility and a sewing and weaving area. The Creative Growth Gallery sells artwork produced by the artists and supports these upcoming artists. The gallery exhibits and promotes their most excellent works in important collections and renowned international institutions. It represents Creative Growth Artists at art fairs in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Miami, etc. The artwork sold by the gallery is all donated to the artists, and the revenues go back to buying the program materials and sustaining the organization. Many works by Creative Growth Artists are collected globally, among them the MoMA, SFMOMA, and Smithsonian. The involvement of the Creative Growth community is fundamental. Art collectors and donors are vital to the organization. Most of Creative Growth's financial support comes from art sales. This helps us maintain sufficient quality materials in the studio and ensure the artists' work is displayed at local, national, and international levels.
