ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

In 1985, after my graduation from UCSD, I moved to Normal Heights and opened Jyoti-Bihanga Vegan Restaurant. This place is San Diego's oldest vegetarian eatery, and it stands who knows how many years. It was also after five years of operation that I left the restaurant to move to San Diego and travel the globe delivering meditation workshops for the Sri Chinmoy Centre. Pilgrimage to the Heart Yoga began in 1999 as a small boutique that sold gifts. The idea of creating a business that could survive and send spiritual energy out was mine. My teacher, Sri Chinmoy, told me about this idea and named it The Pilgrimage for the Heart. After my mother died in 2003, she and my father, who taught me about business, provided some seed money to start the venture. The Pilgrimage for the Heart, a gift store, was managed for four years at East Room, which is now East Room. We later got more space, and remodelling converted it to the current East Room. The business changed to yoga in 2005 after I thought much and eventually learned what brought me joy. Jyoti Bihanga was established in 2005. I found more fulfilment working in the service sector than in retail. The business expanded, creating our first yoga space, the East Studio Lounge. Sean O'Shea, my recessery yoga adviser and my yoga teacher, helped me redesign and gave me many advice, and also taught private classes for 14 months until his sudden death. After a few months, the yoga space was full to capacity with 12 students! After the East Room was redesigned, the lounge was used as a reception area. Sri Chinmoy passed away in 2007 after 27 years of training me in spirituality and meditation. In 2007, Sri Chinmoy, my spiritual and meditation teacher for 27 years, died. I decided to focus my full time on the yoga studio. In 2008, Maral Haidi gave me the tools that pushed the studio to the next level. Blair Hartwell was the first studio manager after 12 years of service. The studio transformed into a true yoga community over the next two years. This period saw the duration of many relationships. In this time, we increased our classes from 14 to 35 per week and 100 plus. We also organized our first teacher training in 2009, which was taught by Haunani Chong and Nikole Fortier. Nikole was the teacher for 21 classes in almost 10 years, graduating 183 students. Main Studio opened in spring 2011. Linda Martone, the current general manager, became the Normalheights Studio Manager. The studio, coupled with the community's growth, demanded strict business organization. Linda's attention to detail made it easier for us to grow. The second studio, in the North Park, was opened at the junction of North Park Way and 30th Street. Caroline Moreira, Meghan Sciascia, and Meghan Moreira became North Park managers. Kara Willingham facilitated our relocation to North Park. We reorganized our management systems in 2019. Marie Barranco became the Normal Heights Manager, and Linda moved to the General Manager. Desiree Iacono became the assistant manager for the studios. Lauren McLaren became the yoga teacher training administrator. She was also the teacher training coordinator. Jamie Lee led Pilgrimage teacher training. The year 2020 saw dramatic changes in our day-to-day operations. Due to the pandemic, the North Park studio closed, and there are now physical yoga classes, outdoor yoga classes, Zoom, and on-demand yoga classes in both Normal Heights and online. Explanation: The article discusses how the yoga studio transitioned over time and introduced new classes.
