ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

San Jose Bike Clinic is a community-based bicycle repair shop in San Jose that emphasizes education to promote bicycle use and access. The idea for the project was conceived during a November 2011 meeting between 25 bicycling enthusiasts and supporters from San Jose. The idea of a project that could incorporate elements of other biking entities like bike shops, transport advocacy groups, and bike groups was a result of the brainstorming session. This idea was worth developing after the meeting, although several attendees did not follow up on the initial process. New members learned about and organized the project. The key organizers met with Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and Silicon Valley Bike Exchange in November and December 2011. These meetings revealed that there was unmet demand in San Jose, which sustained the Bike Clinic project. The group met twice in January 2012 to agree on key goals and write a mission statement. Members later voted on the name, leading to the inception of San Jose Bike Clinic. Our first event, Coming Out Demo, took place on March 3rd, 2012 at Diridon Transit Centre in downtown San Jose. Approximately 70 people attended, with 41 receiving services, which included bike repair instructions and access to stands and tools. We ran safety rides, which demonstrated how to ride safely on the streets. Our second event, Bike to Work Gear Up, took place on April 29, 2012, at San Pedro Square Market in downtown San Jose. About 60 people were served throughout the day, with over 40 people attended to. This free event was held in preparation for Bike To Work Day, two weeks later. It included bike repair education, personalized route planning, tools, and safety rides, as well as games, and bike repairs. The Bike Clinic organizers continue to meet twice a month for planning, and once a month holds Skill Sharing sessions at the San Pedro Square Market. Besides attending the San Jose Downtown Farmers Market regularly, we often lead rides, and may pursue a public service opportunity in downtown San Jose on temporary engagements.

SUMMARY   Reviews Summary

Reviews speak to the fact that the San Jose Bike Clinic is a friendly and cost-effective option for bike repairs. Many reviewers are ecstatic about how the volunteers are helpful, and several have stated how the team is good at diagnosing and resolving problems. The clinic provides guidance and demonstrations, and many have indicated that it is an ideal place to learn how to keep on top of their bicycle maintenance. Several clients have mentioned that their financial predicament was considered, calling the clinic a blessing. This situation was similar for someone who could not afford to take her bike to the store. She is impressed with how the clinic treats everyone with care and compassion, even the needy. Club members have seen a top-tier service in the clinic. One member notes that they charged him $5 for a seat post and a quick front-brake tweak. This is different from the store mechanism, where they charge per hour. Members also have a way of appreciating the fact that they are charged based on how appreciative they are of the service. A group of newcomers didn't charge their few minutes of service when they mentioned they wouldn't forget to donate. Variety is another aspect that the clinic boasts of, with them offering all kinds of bikes for sale, either in full or just some few parts for those interested in that. One person mentioned that several such bikes cited that the majority of such bikes offered for sale both new and old are very pocket-friendly. No bike was more than $20, meaning that even if someone is not able to afford the new ones, they could always opt for the old ones. Many people have seen the clinic as a haven for those like them, who wants to learn about repair yet can't afford the high prices due to their many commitments. Some reviewers said they would instead keep their bikes at home to avoid spending as much on repair services place also offers discounts. That's why it has become a frequent stopover for many around the San Jose area.
