Florida State College at Jacksonville - South Campus was established in 1965 as Florida Junior College. FJC's first classes were held at two temporary, renovated facilities on August 22, 1966. The Southside Campus, South Jacksonville Elementary School, Flagler Street, and the Cumberland Campus, Cumberland Road, off Roosevelt Boulevard. A commencement ceremony was held at the Civic Auditorium in May 1968, two years after the College's first graduating class. The College would open five additional campus locations in the next 20 years, which are now the Florida State College at Jacksonville. The College celebrated enrolling its 500,000th student in 1986. Community input prompted FCCJ to change its name to Florida Community College at Jacksonville. The College experienced a massive growth over the following two decades by increasing its courses and programs. The College was accredited to offer the baccalaureate program in 2007.
