Under Dr. Charles M. Leaming, Florida Beacon College and Seminary started teaching Bible Truths in 1947 to students who aspired to be Pastors, Missionaries and Bible Teachers. The school, then known as St. Petersburg Bible Institute at that time, was situated in St. Petersburg. The school moved from St. Petersburg, Florida to Largo in order to accommodate the growing student population. In the meantime, Florida Beacon College & Seminary was named. Florida Beacon College & Seminary is still led by Dr. Charles M. Leaming, who was appointed in 1980 to lead the school. Our mission is to inspire, empower and educate individuals in order for them to make a difference and improve the world. This college is a community-based school of medicine. Students spend the first two years studying basic science on FSU's campus in Tallahassee. They then transfer to one regional medical school campus for their third and fourth year of clinical training. In 2003, three regional campuses were opened: Pensacola and Orlando. To accommodate the 240 students in third and fourth year, additional campuses were opened at Sarasota ((2005), Daytona Beach (2007) and Fort Pierce (2008). The state boasts a clinic faculty with more than 1,500 doctors. The college also opened an Immokalee rural clinic-training facility in 2007. Third- and fourth-year college students can choose to complete elective or required rotations at the site. This is in keeping with the college's goal of serving the medically poor. Rural clinical training opportunities can also be found in Marianna (home to the college's rural programme) and Thomasville (Ga). Third-year rural students can spend an entire academic year in Marianna (about an hour west of Tallahassee) and complete rotations. Florida State University College of Medicine is committed to developing outstanding physicians that practice patient-centered medicine, advance knowledge and respond to the needs of their communities, particularly those serving elders, minorities, or rural populations. FSU College of Medicine is a national leader in the preparation of compassionate doctors to provide the best 21st century patient-centered medicine for communities most in need.
