Florida Community College (FCC) was created by the Florida Legislature in 1965. Just one month later, the College received its charter. At the time, Florida Governor Haydon Burns authorized the Charter Trustee Organization. Sixty-six students attended the first class on September 20, 1965. The College was initially named Florida Junior College. The College's first class took place at two temporary, renovated sites on August 22, 1966, including the Southside Campus, South Jacksonville Elementary School, Flagler Street, and the Cumberland Campus, Cumberland Road, off Roosevelt Boulevard. Florida Junior College's first commencement ceremony was held at the Civic Auditorium in May 1968. The College was then recognized as Florida Junior College. In August 2009, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name to Florida State College at Jacksonville. Since then, the College has continued to grow and thrive, boasting an enrollment of over 40,000 students today. FSCJ has stood the test of time in providing a diverse learning environment that ensures student success and has remained steadfast in building on its achievements.
