Loyd Bourgeois founded his Luling law office on River Road, in 2010. He was an independent practitioner for many years with no other staff. He practiced mainly disability law in those days. This included Social Security Disability as well as ERISA Long-Term Disability, which is the type usually offered by employers. Clients from the past frequently asked if Bourgeois handled personal injury and car accident cases. Sometimes they'd call to complain that another lawyer in their area had been hired for an auto-injury case. But they didn't get the same attention or information as the Bourgeois. Bourgeois was determined to assist his clients in their legal proceedings and expanded into personal injuries. Individuals with a severe disability, such as a permanent or temporary handicap, can receive benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA). While there are many programs that may allow people with disabilities to be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance, the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI), is one of the most significant. SSDI provides financial support to disabled people based on their income and work history. It can also be very helpful for individuals who are unable to pay their living expenses.

This calculator adds two numbers. Back pay is the monthly benefit your policy should have paid (after any SSDI offset) multiplied by the months it has been unpaid. Future benefits are the same monthly amount until benefits normally end at age 65, converted to today's value with a discount rate. Insurers rarely pay the full future value in a lump sum, so the estimate also shows the range buyouts typically land in, which depends on whether you are still being paid, were cut off, or were denied from the start.
General information about Louisiana disability insurance law, not legal or tax advice. The estimate is not a guarantee: your policy wording, medical evidence, offsets and the insurer's position all change the answer. A disability lawyer can tell you how these rules apply to you.
