I have held a law license since 1980. When I was a lawyer in my first quarter of practice, I held different jobs at the Employment Security Commission. This gave me a full grasp of North Carolina's unemployment benefits system. From 1980-1991, I was an appeals referee, holding hearings for the claims of unemployment benefits applicants. I served North Carolina from 1991-1997 as the Chief Appeals referee. I took different legal posts from 1997-2005, including Deputy Chief Attorney. Shelli Rice and I started Monteith & Rice after my retirement from the state. In 2017, Shelli Rice left due to her relocation to Western North Carolina. I was left with Monteith Law PLLC firm. My focus is representing North Carolinians in employment-related issues, including employees in the state and local government affected by the State Human Resources Act.
