About ChaShaMa Space for Artists Chashama’s beginnings were rooted in the legacy of Reza Abdoh, a theatre visionary. Founded in 1995 by Anita Durst, Chashama was designed to be a place where new theatre could be created. New York City’s lack of space presented the most critical roadblock to a lively cultural atmosphere. Consequently, we initiated a program to become partners with Property Owners to secure studios and presentation space for artists in Midtown Manhattan. We rented 7 locations at 42nd Street between Broadway and 6th streets, presenting more than 700 shows. We are now in midtown Manhattan and the five boroughs, where artists can use 120 workspaces and presentation space, and we offer free workspaces. Our new location proposes 150 events, 120 artists’ workspace per year, and 80 workshops in 4 communities. Property owners work with chashama to transform unused land into something more inclusive, diverse and equitable. Artists and small business can utilize the space. Classes are also available for communities.
