Founded by Diana Byer in 1978, the New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) has been described by the New York Times' Alastair Macaulay as an "indispensable company." The company's revivals of masterpieces and hour-long dances based on children's literature have been recognized nationally. NYTB is now celebrating 40 years and has brought dozens of ballets to adults and families alike. The company's repertoire features works by Frederick Ashton, Merce De Mille, and Jose Limon, as well as Antony Tudor, Agnes de Mille, and more. NYTB has performed at Carnegie Hall with The New York Pops in a sold-out show. The company has other notable performances across the nation and internationally, including at Danspace Project as well as Jacob's Pillow in Kaatsbaan International Dance Center and New York City Center. NYTB's mission is to offer affordable programming that includes new and small ballet masterpieces for children and adults. This mission is accomplished through the Professional Company, Ballet School NY, and the LIFT Community Service Program. These branches work together to engage adult and family audiences within the United States and establish a diverse future audience for the future. NYTB has presented numerous family-friendly and adult-focused programs in the United States and internationally, and the Company is respected for its theatricality, production values, and intimate contact with audiences.

Families strongly appreciate the all-around support and encouragement given to the young dancers. Ms. Byer embraces a holistic approach to dance, teaching her students discipline and the importance of each move. One mom mentioned that the shows are always worth watching, as well as the people in the dancing community are very friendly and inclusive. Adults at the school also have positive comments about the adult lessons which include pure technique, helpful corrections, clean and beautiful classrooms, and a reasonable fee. Adult sessions consist of a peaceful mix of floor and center and give space for the learners to warm up in advance. Adult classes have an appropriate schedule, clear instructions, and occasionally feature guest instructors from the broader community, such as the larger company lead performers. This multi-generational institution is recommended for all who love and appreciate world-renowned dance.
