It was constructed with limestone foundations and steps and brick walls and fifty-foot chimneys. The structure evokes an atmosphere of permanence, and it asks that we "steward" the property while we're engaged with it. Its current owners have done this by fixing up the place and then sharing. It has been a shared home for 25 years, even though it was originally a one-family house with servants. However, we know that it has been a type of shared residence ever since, either as an apartment or rooming house or a fraternity in the 1900s. It was divided into five rental units when we arrived at the house. However, it was done in an amazingly generous manner that kept its original architecture intact. While we were raising our children, we lived in a portion of the house while renting the remainder. The rental quarters have been made available to the public as suites in the guesthouse.
