David Baer studied engineering at The Ohio State University in Ohio for a few years before deciding to leave the classroom and go on vacation before he approached the real world. Cycling through Vermont, he arrived in Columbus less than three months later.
A local bike shop had a "Help Wanted" sign in its window when he got back. He signed up immediately and worked part-time. This allowed him to learn the fundamentals of selling, servicing, and repairing all types of bikes. After a few weeks, He quit the job such that he could start his business using the right skills he had within his reach. The idea of being an essential part helped him learn the basics of bike service and his love for cycling grew. This enabled him to distribute flyers in and around the campus, offering his services for small repairs and services. The coming years saw a lot of growth as he was able to expand and start selling products and gear directly from the retailers. Baer wheels were officially opened in 1990.
