About this business

The company was founded back in 1978 and was originally known as Festival Ballet of Rhode Island. Christine Hennessey and Winthrop Corey, both former Royal Winnipeg Ballet principal dancers, led FBRI for almost two decades. They were able to make it a major player in New England and one of the most reputable regional companies all over the nation through their efforts. Hennessey was the company’s artistic director from its establishment in 1987 until her death in 1997. Her daughter Elizabeth, who had been with the FBRI as a dancer, became the interim artistic director. Ballet RI – formerly known as Festival Ballet Providence – has been the premier dance company in Rhode Island for about four decades. This reimagining of a traditional dance into a modern experience promises a bold, innovative, and forward-thinking future. Ballet RI – formerly known as Festival Ballet Providence – is Rhode Island's premier dance company, leading a journey of innovation.
