Mid-South Christian College took the place of Memphis Christian College launched in Memphis in Tennessee in 1959. This institution had strong ties with St. Louis Christian College with Vernon Newland, one of its professors, leading in its formation. Newland reported requests from the Mid-South to start the institution due to his work in other Bible Colleges for many years. On January 9, 1959, a meeting was held in Memphis to create the Memphis Christian Bible College. About 40 individuals, including 24 ministers who came from Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, attended the event. They unanimously agreed to open the Memorial Christian School of the Bible located in Memphis, then were nominated to lead it after some weeks (Carter, 2014). Dr. Vernon Newland accepted the presidency and shared teaching responsibility with four appointed part-time teachers. Classes were held at Oakhaven Christian Church.
