ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

On April 1, 1976, Archway Gallery was created. Archway was founded by a group artists. The artists thought it was time for them to have control over selling the art. They thought artists should only run the gallery, and new members would buy out the business. Archway got the first space at the C.G. Jung Center (5200 Montrose). The space had 600 square feet of exhibition area. Archway was named for the unique arches in the gallery. At first, Archway was meant to be artist-owned. Members could operate only after joining the cooperative. They had to purchase a track-light head and sign its agreement. Initially, Archway had eleven members: Elaine Adams, June Adler, Judy Bush, Mary Bush (Judy Bush), Joan Calabro, Dorothy English, Joyce Gould, Janet Hassinger, Marianne Hornbuckle, and Stephanie Nadolski. John Zander was the first to sign it. The Gallery's first mission statement was "Archway Gallery": An Artist-owned and operated gallery for nationally and regionally recognized professional artists. They could exhibit their art in a highly professional manner. Each member had an equal voice in all the gallery's operations. They would educate the public and share their art. After relocating to 2517 University Boulevard, Rice Village, in August 1980, the gallery’s size increased to 3000 sq ft as the roster grew to twelve members. The gallery has had other homes over the years, including one on Montrose near Texas Art Supply. For over 15 years, the roster was housed in this 2013 West Gray building. The space was 1200 sq ft in size. In 2013, the store was taken over by a lingerie shop. Archway moved to 2305 Dunlavy in 2008, the current location. The gallery now comprises 30 member artists. Archway touched hundreds of Houston artists' lives and careers. These are the words and thoughts of Stephanie Nadolski. Archway Gallery was part of my artistic journey. The gallery aided my growth in many aspects.
