Kathleen Royer began a family law practice in Seattle in 1992. Her degrees are from Humboldt State University and the Seattle University School of Law. Her practice emphasized cooperative/collaborative cases, mediation, and settlement conferences. Kathleen offers alternative dispute resolution services for families to solve their family law problems. She has specialized training for parent-teen mediation. Kathleen is a graduate of extensive professional mediation training. Kathleen is available to help with all aspects of divorcing including child custody, parenting, post-decree modifications, and complicated property issues. Kathleen has extensive experience with complex parenting issues and non-parental custody, before founding Northwest Family Mediation. Kathleen has also handled guardianships, adoptions, special education, and dependency. She served as an experienced trial lawyer and appellate judge and has handled appeals before both state and federal courts. Kathleen’s legal jurisdictions include the United States District Court of the Western District of Washington, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and U.S. Supreme Court. Kathleen received the United States Supreme Court's permission to practice law. Kathleen also served as the King County Superior Court Court Commissioner pro Tempore since 1998, and as the Volunteer Settlement Conference Master for King County Superior Court from 2001 to 2002. Kathleen is a speaker for continuing legal education programs, including Unified Family Court and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Kathleen also presented on Third Party (nonparental) Custody Matters and Family Law Skills Training. Kathleen also presents Ethics and Compelling and Defending Against Discovery. Ethics and Representing a Client with a Disability. Kathleen was also a part of the Family Law Practice at the Ex Parte Department.
