David Hollen hails from northeast Wisconsin. He took art courses at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minnesota. His company, Hollen Art Studio, does sculpture installations under a contract with theatre groups and commercial locations. Frank Theobald, a sculptor in Los Angeles' Arts District, is Hollen's wife. Their son, Otto, often helps with the installations. David mainly works in sculpture and uses materials such as steel, stainless cable, and porcelain castings in his work. Museum and Gallery Shows Hollen's art is displayed in many galleries and museums throughout Southern California. His work can also be found in some private collections. Creating a psychologically shared landscape, my sculpture mimics architecture. I have created a stylized language out of a grid-like use of materials that marks the connection between the 'house' of the natural world we live in and our sublime sensibility of 'home,' which seeks to combine into a sublime gestalt. Answering Questions I get a lot of questions about my work. For example, how can an almost-military steel grid become softened into protection when adorned with scores of porcelain-cast, hard thorns? How can something as simple as steel cable be used to brace and support the formation of cells? These questions drive my research. I often choose materials such as hemp rope, steel cable, and concrete reinforcement rods to express these core ideas effectively. While many of these materials are commonplace, when combined with porcelain, they create a diverse chorus of shapes that resonate with an ethereal-yet-sturdy presence.
