Where most funeral homes have been sold to large, remote corporations, the Magraths continue the tradition. The funeral home was founded in 1910 by Frederick A. Magrath, a family-owned and managed business. In 1947, the Magraths introduced East Boston's first real funeral home, located on the old Bethel Church site. The funeral was outside the family home, excluding the death, which greatly eased the burden on families. The building was demolished to construct the Callahan Tunnel in 1959. It became home to the Magrath Funeral Home at 325 Chelsea Street, where it has remained almost sixty years later.
