Department of Art + Design (now known as Hite Institute of Art + Design) offers the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Design. The curriculum is structured in accordance with guidelines set by the College Art Association of America. It includes a rigorous evaluation standard, high-quality and varied courses, and faculty mentorship. Students are given a generous amount of access to faculty members who give individual attention to them, listen to their directions, and encourage them to discover new artistic avenues. Students can choose from ceramics, fibers and glass, as well as painting, photography and printmaking. They may also combine different media under the mentorship of faculty. This program encourages students to take a multidisciplinary perspective that allows them to explore their creativity in light of cultural, ethical, philosophical and social concerns. The Hite Institute offers a wealth of resources to students in this program, such as multiple art galleries located on campus or in Downtown Louisville, partnerships and collaborations with other local galleries and museums, and a speaker schedule that includes internationally recognized curators and gallery directors. The university will collaborate with regional and local museums to provide students with opportunities to interact with the larger arts community. These organizations have partnered with the University on joint projects and internships to strengthen the ties between them and the local community. This gives students a unique opportunity to be involved in the civic life.
