Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts

Departments Kinder HSPVA prides itself on six arts departments: Dance, Vocal Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Instrumental Music. They are the school's reason for being and heartbeat. Our History HSPVA, founded in 1971, has won many awards since then. The art departments have a long list of ex-students who are now active in the arts community. About the Artist Born in Houston’s inner-city backyards, Kava Kristoff was a proud mug of sun tea. In 1992, she graduated from Kinder HSPVA. She is also excited to come home as an instructor in the Visual Art department. In 2002, she received her BFA (New Genres) from San Francisco Art Institute and in 2012 her MFA in Performance Art from Chicago Art Institute. Kristoff has taught art at HSPVA and YES College Preparatory, at Bayou Village Waldorf School and Westside High School. She has also served as a mentor at Chicago’s Link’s Hall. Kristoff connects as a life artist who blurs the lines between Art, Real Life, and Everything Else. She is always looking to make art, in whatever form that might take, and can be seen in the poetry of an installation placed on a glass fridge shelf or in the mischief and potentiality she is present in when allowing her daughter to draw alongside and collaboratively with her. Kristoff is interested in artists as thinkers and all the subversive, political, thoughtful ways an artist can choose to engage with their audience. Her preferred way of reaching audiences is through humor, especially when she gets to display formal work outside of the pretentious historical lineage that “museums” or “galleries” might try to construct. Whole Artist Food Work: Kristoff has always led with her stomach and swallowed with her heart. Everything Kristoff has ever tried to do in her life has been an attempt to transform herself through the soul, and yet she has always been aware of her limitations. Her current project is a memoir about her life, about dreams and wishes and hopes. Kristoff has also curated and organized artist-run spaces such as CSAW in Houston TX and Performance Bay in Galveston TX, also in Mutherland, Chicago Il.

The reviews for the school are mostly positive, with many people sharing their appreciation for the environment, staff, modern facilities and the artistic talents fostered by the institution. There are several comments about HSPVA's challenging workload, but students mention how helpful their instructors are in assisting with stress. A prospective student and guest were also impressed by the building and were welcomed by current students as well. Beyoncé’s admission to the school is a point of honor for many former students and potential students.
