Art Square Studios offers a space for artists. It is that easy. Houston's art scene is a wonderful place to be. We also love our Houston residents. Our annual events promote our artists. Vicki and Ben wanted more than just to provide materials. The couple wanted studios to be built for artists. They wanted to create a community for artists who work alone. Ben and Vikki purchased a Midtown abandoned building in 1997. It was home to an Insurance company, the City of Houston office, the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting room, and, of course, a haunted residence. Our studio is also home to Art Supply Art Expo, an exclusive supply store.

Jay Long was born in 1969 in Houston, Texas. Jay Long learned many valuable lessons as an adolescent during the early eighties punk music leftovers. Jay also knew how to take out a screen from a faucet to make it more useful. Jay also learned how to handle a 12-pack by its cardboard handle instead of holding it like a football to increase the success rate in unfunded liquor purchases. Armed with a G.E.D., Jay was able to continue his education. Jay was armed with a G.E.D. and a pencil number 2 and decided to enroll at Austin Community College for a degree as an Art major. Jay moved to Los Angeles to complete the 2-year program. Jay was only one class away from completing it. Jay had a brief but successful career as a prop maker and background artist in television and film. A gradual disenchantment resulted in a necessary hiatus at the Santa Cruz Mountains on Monterey Bay. Jay found refuge in a redwood shack and began to develop a personal style in his techniques. This was the foundation of my career as an independent Fine Artist. It's quite simple to live in the moment. Jay is often found at home in Austin, Texas, working diligently in his studio.

Since I was young, my sensitive nature has slowly been expanding into an infinite fountain of wonders. I have been able to communicate with the outside world through my creative side of life. It is a part of who I am and what drives me every day. My most impulseive personality attributes can sometimes make it difficult to see the significance of the instantaneous connections I have with the world around. This is where even an instantaneous moment can become transcendental. This is when I can reflect upon what I see and then react on the materiality of the raw materials. I spent my childhood in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. I have felt and taken in the positive influences from these cultures throughout my life. My 20-year career as a professional artist has been devoted to commissions, academic enrichment and individual work. Some of these have earned me honorary national distinctions. Recently, my heart has been fueled by a desire to help others. What I have learned and love is what I will use to ease the suffering of people who are grieving, as well as those who celebrate a new beginning.

My two girls went to college. I took both a life coach certification and a painting course. My life coach journey led me to discover that expressive painting was a part of my soul and that it helped me feel more connected with my emotions. This was so powerful that I decided to coach myself as a professional, full-time artist. I also learned the value of happiness and positivity in my creative work through life coaching. Each day brings me on a new adventure into many unknowns. Experimenting with different substrates and media, including alcohol inks on glass, metal and yupo papers, as well as traditional forms such acrylic paints or mixed media on canvas, is what I enjoy. But I am always looking for new ways to make. My works are bursting with color and create a coherent body of work. The conceptual level is where you may find the secret power. This ensures the art never stays static, as it expands and turns inside itself. My life-coaching experiences taught me that what you see is dependent on your life situation and the position you're in the room. This is what I consider happiness.

Lyn Belisle is a nationally recognized mixed media artist from San Antonio. She uses Texas clay, wood, beeswax and found objects as well as paint, paper, sinew, and paint to create unique, symbolic and spiritual assemblages and collages. Lyn studied art as an undergraduate at Trinity University, San Antonio. She earned her Master of Arts at Texas A&M and taught public schools for thirty years. In 2001, Lyn was named Texas Teacher of the year for her efforts to develop Art and Technology Fusion with at-risk students. She has exhibited her work at national and regional galleries. Lyn Belisle Studio was her artist-in residence. She teaches creativity workshops in Taos and Santa Fe as well as classes on mixed media.

John Bishop, a Houston-based painter and illustrator. He was born in Houston but has lived most of his adult life on the road. John received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas. Since college, he's been involved with photography, creative writing, and fine arts. John spent thirty years as a librarian in Texas and New Mexico. He also worked in California, New Mexico and California. New Zealand and the Emirates. In 2016, John and his partner returned to Houston where they now run their own creative company in fine art and publishing. My art aims to bring together, to link disparate elements into new vocabulary, stories that are both archetypal and fresh. What I feel is what I paint, write, photograph and create. My art is not history. It's a window into me, my emotions, and my symbols. I hope you'll recognize my story and that your art will become mine.
